  Construction of glass unit

энергосберегающие стеклопакетыGlass units are volumetric articles consisting of two or three glass sheets, hermetically joined between each other by the contour by means of distance frames and sealants. At that, closed chambers arise filled with dried air or inert gas. Main functions of glass unit: natural lighting, heat saving (heat insulation) and protection against noise (noise insulation).

The plant “Continent-Windows” has own fully automated workshop of glass unit production. Glass units of different complicacy and different purpose are produced here. М1-type Float-glass produced by Lisichansk or Saratov glass-manufacturing plants is used in production. Depending on customer’s needs, there are additional different variants of glasses: energy saving glass, multifunctional glass, different kinds of tinted glass, mirror glass, ribbed glass shockproof glass. Application of decorative glass is possible. More in detail you can learn about it in section “Decoration of glass units”.

Operation features of a window depend significantly on glass unit: appearance, comfort inside a room, its protectability and expenses for heating, therefore when choosing a glass unit, its purpose is to be taken into consideration. Depending on the purpose, glass units are divided in types: ordinary glass unit, glass unit with higher energy saving features, glass unit with higher solar-control features. Besides, it should be taken into consideration that glazing can be produced not only as a glass unit but also as single (mono) glass. This is reasonable to do in unheated premises – which will help to reduce the weight of construction and to reduce its cost.

Heat saving glass units

In winter period many people suddenly find out that there is wind blowing again from their windows. And there arises a question: to seal up or to change? And if change, what to change for? In summer the room is overheated with heat and the only salvation is using an air-conditioner. We heat in winter, and we cool in summer; and with that we constantly pay and pay. It is possible to reduce those expenses if using special glass units.

Purpose of glass units:

For increasing heat insulation in winter.

Using energy saving glass (i-glass). It prevents loss of heat in winter period of the year. Energy saving glass reflects thermal energy back into the room. Filling in the room with inert gas slows down moving molecules inside a glass unit, at the same time impeding significantly heat exchange processes. Warm distance frame of polycarbonate CHROMATECH ultra will impede formation of cold bridge by the contour of glass unit, at the same time impeding formation of condensate on the frame and on the glass. Polycarbonate does not reduce durability features of construction and its heat insulating features certainly increase. Warm distance frame is not included in window completion and is ordered optionally.

Glass units of large width (38 mm) keep heat still better than thinner one- or two-chamber glass units. And using one or two energy saving glasses and filling in with the gas heats the glass unit maximally.

Ordinary glass unit suits only for technical use.

When using energy saving glass, good values of heat saving in winter are obtained.

When using multifunctional glass, a solar-control factor is added to good heat protection features, and the glass unit finds wide application in the rooms thereof windows face the sun directly.

One-chamber glass unit has poor soundproofing features.

Two-chamber glass unit (three glasses)
The-chamber glass unit keeps microclimate in the room much better than one-chamber glass unit. Besides, this glass unit has better acoustic insulation features.

Unlike one-chamber glass unit, two energy saving glasses (for maximal values of heat saving in the room) or energy saving glass and multifunctional glass (for maximal values of saving heat in the room with additional solar-control filter) can be used in it at the same time.

Energy saving – the Premium glass unit keeps heat in the room 2.6 times better than the ordinary 24 mm glass unit.

Economy – using two energy saving glasses in one glass unit approaches loss of heat to zero.

Sound insulating glass units

Certainly only two-chamber glass unit can be considered as sound insulating. For increasing sound insulating features of two-chamber glass units, there is a method – application glasses and distance frames of different thickness in one glass unit. In this case usual physical laws work. This method allows effective putting out the sonic wave. Also very effective will be filling in the chambers with inert gas for increasing soundproofing features of glass unit. Inert gas detains passing sonic waves 1.2-1.3 times better than air. Inert gas is safe for human health, for it is non-combustible and is a component of air.

Solar control glass units

Two methods are used for increasing solar-control features – reflection of infrared radiation in summer:

1. application of solar-control films on the glass unit;
2. using multifunctional glass in glass unit structure.

Solar-control films are used for protection against the sun. For the right choice it is necessary to understand which namely obstacle for the light should be created. For example, the “20 SI” film will transmit only 20% of visible light, the “50 SI” film – 50% accordingly. The higher this value is, the more light comes into the room. Mainly the films are used which transmit 15, 20, 35 and 50 percent of light. These films also can be of different colors.
Main colors of films:

•    bronze,
•    sun (copper) bronze,
•    silver,
•    grey films,
•    coal-colored
•    blue,
•    green,
•    golden.

The films of types “Vista” and “Light” have double purpose: increasing energy saving function of glass unit and solar-control function. By means of these films economy in energy saving of up to 60% can be reached. “Vista 35” will transmit 35% of sun light, and also save up to 60% of energy inside the room.

All films provide effect of energy saving, and also shockproof effect.

Special solar-control glasses Stopsol Phenix of the company AGC have many advantages compared to films.

- Glass is mass-coloured  and it does not fade in the course of time

- It has a well favoured appearance

- Coating is resistant to mechanical effect, therefore it can be used as mono-glass (no double glassing unit) and it does not require special protection when in service

- it protects interior design items from fading efficiently

- High degree of reflection and control of solar energy.

For effective protection of the room against overheating, multifunctional glass is used at production of glass units. Multifunctional glass and i-glass are different types of glass and they are made in different ways, and whereas the i-glass reflects energy into one side, the multifunctional glass reflects to both sides. This glass allows not only protecting the room against overheating in summer, but also getting good heat protection values in winter. Filling in the chambers with inert gas will also affect positively increasing those features of glass unit.

Production technology of energy saving i-glass includes five-layer application of silver oxides on the glass surface.

Up to ten different metallic layers are applied on the glass surface at production of multifunctional glass. Different metals reflect solar wave energy of different length. Silver oxides reflect heat energy inwards, saving heat inside the room in winter, and other metal layers reflect solar energy outwards. The plant “Continent-Windows” uses in production the multifunctional glass ClimaGuard Solar from the Guardian company.

Therefore multifunctional glass combines solar-control features and energy saving features, unlike i-glass which bears only one of the above-mentioned characteristics, and namely energy saving.

In hot weather the glass unit with multifunctional glass impedes getting up to 58% of heat rays into the room.

Less amount of penetrating heat rays allows economize significantly electric energy for air conditioning – the room get warm significantly more slowly even on a hot July noon.

Multifunctional glasses, unlike glasses tinted in mass or with the film, do not create shading effect and by that they do not reduce illumination in the room, but at the same time they protect the room effectively against overheating. The visible ray passes through multifunctional glass practically without hindrance.

For the same reason multifunctional glass does not distort naturalness of colors – and the landscape outside the window looks as natural as through the ordinary glass.

Scarcely visible mirror effect of multifunctional glasses can become an additional advantage at keeping complete transparency from inside.

Shockproof glass units

For production of armored glass units we use shockproof (armoring) films. Films 70 micron and 105 micron thick in complex with glass are able to endure shock loads of different power up to 25 kg. They are installed mainly for splinterlessness of window glasses.

The films 215 micron and 285 micron thick are intended mainly for protection against violence.

They are able to endure a shock made with not large object, for example a piece of ice, stone etc. The point of application of the film is increasing the time of entry of strangers into the room. The thicker armoring film is, the more difficult it will be to get over the glass obstacle. These films are completely transparent and do not influence on transmission of the sun light. And at the same time they have a tangible energy saving effect. Energy saving gets increased for 15-20%.

Application of special shockproof tempered glass or triplex glass is possible at glass unit production. The triplex glass is made of two layers of glass joined between each other with a special shockproof film. Production period of glass unit with application of shockproof glasses is longer than that of glass units with ordinary glass.

Decorative films are used for decoration of windows in style of building façades. In production the plant “Continent-Windows” uses films of American production of the firm Lizard. Decorative films are as a rule non-transparent matt and can transmit the sun light in different amounts. And such films as “BK 00” are completely non-transparent. Mainly the thickness of such films does not exceed 70 microns. Main colors of decorative films applied by us: matt bronze, matt white, matt silver, BK 00 – black. At individual order, decoration with other colors is possible.
